Does getting a tattoo hurt & what can I do about it?

The most honest answer to the question ‘Does it hurt?’ is: Yes, a little. But how much varies greatly from person to person and from body part to body part.

What affects the pain?

Areas with thin skin directly over bones, such as ribs or ankles, are usually more sensitive. Areas with more muscle or fatty tissue, like the upper arm, are often less painful. Your daily condition also plays a big role.

What you can do:

Be well-rested, well-fed, and hydrated. Stable circulation is the best painkiller. Breathe calmly and deeply during the session. And: Talk to your artist! We can take breaks.

What you should NOT do:

Please do not take painkillers beforehand, especially not aspirin – they thin the blood. And we strongly advise against numbing creams, as they can alter the skin structure. We generally do not tattoo under anesthesia.

Remember: The pain is temporary, the art is forever. You can do it too! We’ll be there to support you.
