How does my tattoo heal, and what will it look like in 5, 10, or 20 years?
A fresh tattoo is brilliant. But what does it look like after healing? And how does it age? A crucial point for your design choice.
Healing:
Immediately after tattooing, the skin is a wound. It heals over the next 2-4 weeks. The colors will become slightly duller and settle into the skin – this is completely normal and the final result.
Aging:
Yes, tattoos age with your skin. The lines will become minimally wider over the years. Therefore, tattoos with extremely fine, closely spaced details should be approached with caution – they can blur after years. A good tattoo artist will point this out and create designs that are ‘durable’.
What you can do:
The biggest factor for aging is the sun! UV radiation destroys color pigments. The most important rule for a long-lasting tattoo is therefore: sun protection, sun protection, sun protection!
